The
vast
majority of today's candles are made with paraffin wax, a petroleum based by-product of gasoline
refining. Many studies have found that when
burned, paraffin candles can produce toxins, carcinogens
and considerable amounts of black soot which all contribute to unhealthy indoor air quality. Even many seemingly
healthy, aromatherapy
candles fall under this category. Soot can stain the
candle jar
or candle holder and, after long periods of time, can accumulate on
walls, air vents, ceilings and even furnishings. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
has also cited that some of the inhaleable toxins
emitted by paraffin candles include formaldehyde, acrolein, benzene and
acetaldehyde have been known to clog and damage the lungs, and
can sometimes even lead to emphysema—not unlike the effects of
second-hand nicotine smoke.
Soy
candles, on the other hand, are made from natural soy wax, which is hydrogenated soybean
oil.
These candles:
Are non-toxic
(natural, vegetable-based)
Produce
very little soot (that dreaded black ring)
Burn
cleaner,
slower and cooler (helping to better distribute fragrance)
Last
25-50% longer
than paraffin candles (more bang for your buck)
Clean
up easily with soap and water
Are
less likely to trigger allergies or cause irritation for those
with respiratory conditions
These factors tend to make
soy candles more animal and child-friendly than
traditional candles.
It is also worth noting that
soy wax is made from American-grown soybeans. It is biodegradable, comes
from a renewable resource, and helps support the
U.S. economy -- reducing our country's reliance on foreign oil. If a candle doesn't
explicitly state "soy" on the
label, it is probably a paraffin candle. Soy candles, such as those bearing
the
DreamColor Creatives
label, will appear more opaque with a whitish film and utilize only untreated paper or cotton wicks
that are metal and lead free, ensuring a much purer candle.
By making the change from
traditional petrochemical based candles to soy candles, you’re making a solid commitment to your environment, your wallet
and, above all, your health.
For candle lovers
seeking a
longer-lasting, natural alternative with excellent scent throw, soy candles
are the best way
to go! |
